Spit braai user manual
Everything you need to set up, light, clean and store your Spitbraaiers spit braai. Give it a read before your first braai — it takes five minutes and saves you a lot of guessing.
1. Safety precautions
- Keep this manual handy — it gets easier every braai, but check back when in doubt.
- Keep children away while it is running. The unit gets very hot.
- Never stand the spit braai on the ground while in use. Use a trolley or a solid table.
- Always keep a pair of braai gloves within reach.
- Use it in a well-ventilated, protected spot — away from wind and open flames.
- Never overload the grid or rod. That is what strips the gears.
- Keep the motor dry. Never place it in water or leave it out in the wet.
- Keep anything flammable away from the unit.
- Never turn the rod or grid by hand — it damages the internals.
- You want ventilation, but not a draft blowing through it.
2. Setting it up and lighting it
- Connect the gas pipe to the spit with the clamp supplied.
- Attach the regulator end of the pipe to your 9kg gas bottle. If your bottle is smaller than 9kg, use a swivel regulator.
- Open the spit braai and load the grid or rod with your meat.
- Fit the motor and power it — 2 × D batteries, or a plug point for the 220V motor. To run a battery motor off electricity, use a 500mA 1.5V–12V adjustable adapter set to 3V.
- Hold a lighter or match close to the burner on the inside of the spit braai.
- Open the gas valve. The burner will light and glow red.
- Never let gas build up inside the spit before lighting it.
- Never light it in windy conditions.
- Close the door securely, switch on the motor, and let it turn.
3. Cleaning and maintenance
- Warm water and mild dish soap on the grid, rod and exterior.
- No abrasive pads or scourers — they scratch the steel.
- Wipe down the motor if any debris builds up on it.
4. Storage
- Store it somewhere dry and dust-free.
- Avoid humid or wet spots — that is what shortens a unit's life.
- Use a Spitbraaiers cover to keep dust, insects and weather off it.
5. Troubleshooting
- Won't light? Start with the gas bottle — check it is not empty.
- Check every gas connection for leaks with a soapy water solution.
- Motor not turning? Check the batteries are in the right way, or that the plug has power.
- Still nothing? Clean the jet with a jet cleaner from any hardware shop.
6. Warranty and liability
- Our burners and regulators are LPGSASA approved.
- Spitbraaiers does not accept responsibility for damage, injury or loss caused by the product.
